History of World Youth Days

History of the wyd

In July 2008 the XXIII WYD will take place. Here’s what has gone before it: –

1978At the time of his election as Pope, John-Paul II said to young people “You are the future of the world and the hope of the Church”. In 1984 during the closing ceremonies for the Holy Year of the Redeemer, John-Paul II invited young people to gather in Rome for Passion/Palm Sunday, so as to celebrate a special Jubilee for the youth. This first meeting bought together 300.000 young people. Pope John Paul gave them the Jubilee Holy Year Cross, which today is the symbol of the WYD’s. In 1985 as the United Nations Organization had declared the year as the “International year for Youth”, John-Paul II repeated the experience of an international meeting for young people: 450.000 came to Rome on Passion Sunday and the Pope gave them an “apostolic letter” addressed to the “Youth of the World” (31/03/1985). The success of these two meetings encouraged him to promulgate the institution of World Youth days. (In English WYD, in French JMJ), the 20th December 1985.
